Day 41: Tom Cable, World Series, Rudy Gay and more

HEADLINES

1) After no charges weren't filed against Raiders head coach Tom Cable, accusations have come out that Cable abused both of his former wifes and a former girlfriend. What do you make of this situation?

Ben: I smell a witch-hunt. I don't think that Cable is a good coach, or should stay the Raiders top guy -- but I also don't think that these accusations are the business of the public at this time. Cable may or may not have had a situation in his personal life back before he was a public figure and now it is becoming the business of a adult in Youngstown, OH? No. That's wrong.

Boz: It's obviously clear that Cable has some sort of anger management problem. There is documentation that supports all of the accusations made and Cable still denies it, which makes me think that not only does he hit woman, but he lies as well. The man is not fit to be a head coach of a professional football team, which is obvious with the current state of the Raiders. I don't think highly already of Al Davis, but if he keeps Tom Cable around after all of this, I will think less of Al Davis than I already do. I couldn't imagine an owner wanting that type of person representing his football team.

2) The Phillies remained in the world series by taking an 8-6 win in Game 5 behind yet another strong performance from Chase Utley. Where does Utley's performance rank among the all-time greats?

Ben: He's up there. I'm having a hard time comparing his Series with others -- basically because you're having to compare Don Larson's perfect game, Don Mazeroski's game-winning homer, Reggie Jackson's 3 homers, and the list goes on -- but the point is they are all from different era's and different types of players. I think he's had a great series, but I can't place it in any rankings.

Boz: Well he has already tied Reggie Jackson for most home runs during a world series with five, so you have to put it up there in maybe the top five. The problem is that if Yankees do win the series, not many people will remember what Chase Utley has done. If the Phillies come back and win, Utley would be MVP and he also might be called "Mr. October" along with Reggie. What's amazing is that he is killing left-handed pitching. He's owned C.C. Sabathia during the world series and even took a lefty reliever deep last night. It's just too bad no one will remember once the Yankees start celebrating.

3) The Memphis Grizzlies and Rudy Gay failed to agree on a contract extension, making the third-year small forward a restricted free agent after this season. Will Gay be a Grizzlie next season?

Ben: No. The Grizzlies have a terrible organization structure and will somehow fail to keep their best players -- again! Somehow they've lost Pau Gasol and potentially Rudy Gay. Just get used to the lottery Grizzlies fans -- no way you escape this cycle, ever.

Boz: No. Absolutely not. If Rudy Gay really wanted to stay in Memphis then he would have agreed to the five-year, $50 million proposal the Grizzlies offered to Gay. Rudy Gay is extrememly talented, only 23 years old and averages 17 points per game over his two-year career. Next summer is going to be one of the biggest summers for free agents ever and every team is going to sign a big name to keep up. Gay could cash in big this coming summer.

4) The Cleveland Browns have fired GM George Kokinis, who was a good friend of head coach Eric Magini. Is Mangini next?

Ben: No. I think Mangini will somehow survive this season and get at least one more opportunity to right the ship. Spoiler alert -- he won't get it pointed in the right direction.

Boz: Yes. I would almost gaurentee that Mangini is fired once the season is over. Every decision that Mangini has made since being hired in Cleveland has been the wrong decision. The team has the worst offense in the league and Mangini has already benched two quarterbacks. The only reason he was probably hired in Cleveland was because the GM was a good friend of his. His time in New York obviously didn't showcase Mangini as a great head coach, other than beating Bill Belichick once. The Browns are in shambles and they need to completely gut the team and start over from fresh.

TOSS-UP

1) Two teams remain undefeated in the NFL. Who is the better undefeated team? The Colts or the Saints?

Ben: COLTS. Peyton Manning is incredible and while Drew Brees is good, he's not the center of his teams universe, like Manning is.

Boz: The Saints are the better team because they have played, and obviously beaten, better teams than the Colts. The two teams are a push at quarterback, but the Saints have a lot more weapons on offense and probably have the better defense as well.

2) Who is the better NBA player that no one knows about? Sacramento's Kevin Martin or Charlotte's Gerald Wallace?

Ben: TIE. They are both great players and somehow have been overlooked for several years. Martin will get highlights on Sportscenter where he scores 36 points and then you find out, he averages almost 25. And Wallace has been a super-athlete for the Bobcats for 4 years and got no love from the NBA. I can't call it.

Boz: Both players play on bad teams in small markets which is why not everyone knows of them. I'm going to say Kevin Martin because in the past three years he has averaged over 20 points per game and through four games this season he is averaging 31 ppg. Plus, the guy went to Western Carolina. Can anyone name the mascot or what conference Western Carolina is in?

3) What is the bigger college football game this weekend? LSU at Alabama or Ohio State at Penn State?

Ben: LSU at Alambama and it's not even close. That game is HUGE -- has national championship implications. The OSU at Penn State game isn't the same. Neither of those teams lead the conference and neither is getting to the national championship -- thanks to Iowa. LSU/Alabama doesn't get any bigger until the SEC championship game.

Boz: This is a very tough toss-up. Both games have conference championship implications but I'll say that LSU at Alabama is the bigger game since it also has national championship implications as well. With all of the undefeated teams remaining in the BCS, the Crimson Tide need to remain undefeated if they want a shot at the BCS title.

HAPPY HOUR

Ben: Happy 41st Birthday Carlos Baerga. Where or where have you gone Baerga? I remember you KILLING it back in the day. What happened?

Boz: Happy 52nd Birthday to Dolph Lundgren. He was made famous my his role in Rock IV as Ivan Drago. Rocky IV was my favorite of all Rocky films and his line of "I must break you" is what I utter to all of my opponents before all of my fights. Just ask Ben, he was present in one of the two fights of my life.
