1) There's a new fued in golf and it's between Anthony Kim and Robert Allenby. Alleby stated that Kim stayed out drinking until 4 a.m. the night before their singles match in the President's Cup. Kim won the match 5 and 3. Whose side are you taking?
Ben: Are you kidding me? C'mon Allenby, man up, take the loss, and move on. This is such a bad comment. There are several issues I have with this: number one, how did Allenby know Kim was out drinking -- Was he the one buying shots for him at 3 a.m.? Number two, even if this were true, he still kicked your butt hungover, what does that say about your golf game? And lastly, I have no problem with athletes partying when they want to, as long as they can perform when they are called upon, and Kim answered the bell.
Grow up Allenby, you were smoked, deal with it.
Boz: I'm taking Anthony Kim. According to Fred Couples, the captain for the United States team, said that Kim wasn't out any night, let alone Saturday night. I have to imagine that the comments were inspired from the beatdown that Kim came out and gave Allenby during their singles match. I know that most people think that if there is one sport that you can play hungover, it's golf. However, there is no way that Kim could have been out drinking that late and performed at that high of a level. I mean...the man shot six under! I'm sure that Kim still loves the younger lifestyle a bit but not during tournaments. I just think Allenby was shooting off his mouth a bit.
2) Browns' head coach Eric Magini has stated that the Browns are not looking to trade back-up quarterback Brady Quinn. Is this a smart move?
Ben: Everything the Browns are doing right now is a dumb move (aside from trading Braylon Edwards), so.....yeah, this is a dumb move. Quinn has little to no value now anyway, and it's not going to go up while he's parked on the bench. Trade him to a QB starved team, ala' Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams, etc. There are plenty of potential suitors that you could get SOMETHING out of. Right now Quinn is simply going to ride the pine until his rookie contract is up and he'll get to walk and you won't get anything for him. Please just make a move that makes sense. If you don't like what Quinn offers, look elsewhere and ship him out of town.
Boz: I thought that they should have traded either Quinn or Derek Anderson before the season started, but Mangini apparently wanted the rest of the NFL to play a guessing game and not name his starting quarterback until two days before the season opener. A lot of good that did for Mangini since their offense is so bad that other teams probably don't even need to game plan for them. Quinn is still young and would still have some trade value. The Browns should trade him and help their team in other areas. Then, after they get a top-five draft pick next year, they can select their newest future quarterback of the frachise.
P.s.- Mangini should be fired at the end of the season and never get a head coaching position again.
3) The newest addition to the Boston Celtics, Rasheed Wallace, has stated that the Celtics have the talent to win 72 games this season. Do you agree with 'Sheed?
Ben: Nope. Wallace, along with the four of the five starters are getting older and won't all be able to play all 82 games this season. In addition to that, there will be plenty of times they will take nights off, against the Bobcats for instance, and lose a game they shouldn't.
I think the Celtics could be one of the top two teams in the East, but they won't win more then 63 games.
Boz: The Celtics do have a lot of talent, but no team...I repeat NO TEAM is winning 72 games anytime soon. Teams struggle to get to 65 wins anymore. I think that the 72 wins that the Bulls set in 1995-96 is a record that is untouch-a-bull. A starting line-up for the Celtics of Rondo, Allen, Pierce, Garnett and Wallace is pretty scary, and when you add their bench players, the Celtics look like the top team in the East again. But once again, no team is getting 72 wins.
4) A day after reports stated that closer Billy Wagner was planning to retire, Wagner's agent has said that he has no intentions to retire. What do you think Wagner should do and what do you think Wagner will do?
Ben: I think Wagner should retire, but I think Wagner will come back, because he's got a massive ego that says he's still a good closer -- because 7 years ago he could throw 100 mph. And his small sample size this year is no proof he can still pitch.
Just a heads up Billy, you can't do that anymore -- you also can't get people out anymore on a consistent basis. Hang 'em up.
Boz: I think he'll pitch another year and I think he should pitch another year. While he is not the flame thrower of the past, he can still pitch. That is evident with the 1.98 ERA in 13 2/3 innings while striking out 22 batters. He is 15 saves short of being just the fifth player to reach the 500 saves plateau and I have to imagine that that is a milestone he wants to reach. I'm sure that there are plenty of teams out there that would allow Wagner a chance to close. The only worry is health as he hasn't had the best string of luck lately.
TOSS-UP
1) Which ex-Bear is having the better season with their new team? Kyle Orton or Cedric Benson?
Ben: KYLE ORTON. His team is 5-0 and has beat Dallas, New England, and Cincinnati. 'Nuff said.
Boz: CEDRIC BENSON. Benson is leading the league in rushing, beating the likes of Michael Turner and Adrian Peterson in the process. Without him, it's tough to say that the Bengals would still be leading the AFC North. The Broncos have been using their defense to win. I think that there are a lot of back-up quarterbacks in the league that could be winning with the Broncos.
2) Which superstar has more pressure to lead their team to the World Series? Manny Ramirez or Alex Rodriguez?
Ben: ALEX RODRIGUEZ. He's always been a great regular season player, but has never had that translate to the playoffs. "Not a clutch hitter" is the line used on A-Rod all the time. Well, to shake that, all he has to do is have one good postseason with the Yanks and he's all of a sudden the greatest postseason hitter of all-time. Just watch.
Boz: ALEX RODRIGUEZ. A-Rod has been in a Yankee uniform since 2004 and has yet to help the Yankees reach a World Series, struggling in any ALCS that New York reaches. This is only Manny's second postseason with the Dodgers and with the youth around him, I think Dodger fans know this won't be the last shot.
3) There have been reports that the Bears have contemplated trading for Terrell Owens. Who would T.O. destroy first? The Bears or the Bills?
Ben: BILLS. It took 3 games for him to take Buffalo from a potential playoff team, to a floundering mess with no direction. You know when T.O.'s not happy, and, well, he's not happy now.
Boz: BILLS. The Bills have nothing else going for that team. There is no running game, the quarterback is not good, the offensive line is awful and the play calling is not good. All things add up to not good numbers for Owens. The Bears are better in all of those categories, minus offensive play calling (Ron Turner is brutal) and would fit better for T.O. With that being said, I don't want Owens in a Bears' uniform. I think the Bears' receivers of Knox, Hester, Bennett, Olsen, etc. are starting to grow on Cutler.
HAPPY HOUR
Ben: Since Boz always takes the good birthdays, I'll say Happy 38th Birthday Frank Wycheck. He was the guy who started the "Music City Miracle", which still sends chills up my spine as I type/think about it. A pretty solid tight end for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans -- and helped set up my favorite non-Detroit Lions play of all-time. I'm going to Youtube that right now.
Boz: Happy 99th Birthday to John Wooden! The greatest college basketball coach of all-time is not only in the Hall of Fame as a coach, but as a player also. His overall coaching record is an astonishing 664-162 and he won 10 national championships in 12 years. He also won a national championship as a player in 1932 with Purdue.
